On this Veterans Day, we want to celebrate the journey of Mike Williams, a true American hero and founder of MR Williams. His spirit, shaped by his childhood and military service, influenced his life, and our company’s success.
Born in a small Ohio village, Mike had a humble upbringing. While a college degree was not something Mike’s parents could afford, hard work instilled in him at home paid off when Mike became a walk-on for Miami University’s football team. By the end of his freshman year, he had earned a full-ride scholarship.
After graduating from Miami University with a degree in Aeronautics, Mike continued to defy expectations. He blazed a trail by becoming the first R.O.T.C. cadet in the country to earn a regular commission from a non-military academy institution.
Mike’s military career soared as he distinguished himself in the Air Force, earning his wings and becoming one of the youngest aircraft commanders to fly the C-141 Starlifter on vital missions worldwide. It was during this time that he faced a defining moment: Flying in the heart of a treacherous sandstorm in Jordan, Mike successfully landed a C-141 on a dry lakebed with zero visibility. Without navigation instruments available, he relied solely on his training and resourcefulness. Miraculously, he found his bearings using the tail of a previously hijacked Boeing 747 passenger plane, before making his zero-visibility landing.
Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Mike pursued a career flying for Eastern Airlines. That career was cut short. Hundreds of Eastern pilots were furloughed due to a downturn in operations due to the 1973-74 Oil Embargo. It was during this time that Mike saw and seized an opportunity to take greater control of his family’s future by purchasing the struggling Watkins & SydnorWholesale Distribution Company. A year later Mike renamed the company M. R. Williams Wholesale Distribution.
Under Mike’s visionary leadership, MR Williams grew into a thriving enterprise, becoming a beacon of excellence in the industry. His military background served as a guiding force, instilling in him a disciplined and resourceful approach to business. His mission never strayed from a dedication to the service of his community and giving opportunities to those whose modest circumstances echoed his own childhood.
Today, as we honor the sacrifices and contributions of our veterans, let us recognize Mike Williams for his selfless service to our country and his enduring impact as an entrepreneur. His exemplary military career and the values he cultivated continue to inspire the culture of MR Williams, shaping the company’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and unwavering integrity.
